The Day My Lola Died
Five days ago, last Saturday. The last (Socorro "Coring" Roxas Iniguez) of my 2 Lolas died. That's the reason I suddenly had no mood to write anything in this blog for quite a while. I may not see Lola quite often; we don't talk a lot either, but she has somehow managed to make me miss her a lot now that she's gone. As I'm writing this entry, I remember all those crazy questions I asked her when I was a kid. Of course, she answers them, but her answers are really funny, even though if she doesn't mean to be funny. That fact alone makes her really hard to forget. I'll give you an example:
6-year-old Kamae: Lola, pano niyo inaayos yung buhok niyo?!
(Silly me... haha. I never saw a comb in her room. that is why I am so curious...)
Lola: Ginagamit ko kamay ko. Ganito oh. (with matching actions of her combing her hair using her hand)
Inside 6-year-old Kamae's mind: Kaya pala ganun ung hati ng buhok niya!!! *laughs in mind*
I've always found that memory humorous. It's really funny that my Lola doesn't even bother using a comb! It's one of those unusual things about her.
Aside from this "unusual thing", I also call her my "SuperLola". You ask me why? At age 85, she mops the floor everytime there's high tide in their house (the water keeps coming in from the door and she keeps mopping it out without fail until who-knows-when), goes up and down very steep stairs with only 1 foot wide steps, goes to watch movies in the cinema with her younger sister, helps my Dad out in the clinic by making paper bags and telling patients this and that about how they should take care of themselves while they're sick, has managed to still keep her bones intact after falling from those very steep stairs, and has cheated death a lot of times before she finally went home to God. I don't know where she gets these powers, it's just so amazing. God has blessed her with such a wonderful life.
She was 93 when she passed away this May 13, 2006. Lola, like other people in this age, just died because of her old age. Like other people this old too, she experienced being bed-ridden (and that's for 4 years); I know that this condition is very hard. I cannot imagine myself just lying on bed all-day, all-night. My father used to pray, since he was little, that his parents will get to know the Lord before they die. Of course, He never fails granting the desires of our hearts. He answered my dad's prayer, and these last 4 years of Lola's life made her stronger in God's faith.
I may miss Lola now, but I am very happy that she finally is in that special place where she belongs.
